utensil with wood as the only material; it is actually doing anything that involves wood in any way. It can be done by carving, carpentry, sawing or painting.
1. Brief History of beginner woodworking projects
Wood has always been available since the beginning of time. After stone this is the next best thing that our ancestors used for their everyday lives; they used it as weapons, utensils, vehicles and even accessories.
It was the Egyptians, as the earliest civilization known to man, that has spreaded the use of wood in furniture during 2000 B.C.; they made beds, tables, chairs, chest and many more.
Historically, men used only woods that are readily available in their region, it was not until trade and transportation became widely developed that different types of woods became available from one region to another.
In time, woodworking became not only a process of creating useful furniture or vehicles but it also became an art. During the middle ages, humans started decorating woods in such as way that they became great statues that can still be seen today.
Although it is proven that wood can stand the test of time, they still tend to crack and split so working with them needs proper handling. Some of the world’s ancient wood sculptures have deteriorated; it could be due to our ancestors’ ignorance on preservation at that time. It was never really known when paint was used for wood but it was color that preserved the wood statues that we can still see today.
At present time, woodworking became a considerably expensive craft and most workers have turned to other materials like steel, aluminum and brass. It is a sad fact that woodworking has been left to dedicated craftsmen who sell their arts at yard sales and flea markets.
However, the fact that there are people who still making things out of wood and that people still appreciates them proves that the art is still not lost.
2. Types of Wood
Basically, wood can be classified into three types:
Hardwoods – these come from trees that shed their leaves yearly such as maple, oak, birch, walnut, poplar and cherry. Among these hardwoods, only red oak and poplar are widely used as furniture and stacked in lumberyards. This is due to their availability, some hardwoods are not always available, and so furniture made out of them can only be found in specialty stores.
Softwoods – this wood type come from a coniferous or an evergreen tree; commonly from pine, hemlock, cedar, fir and redwood. Softwoods are widely used in home construction and they are good varieties for outdoor projects. Pine on the other hand is a traditional wood material for Country-style furniture.
Plywood – this is a manufactured sheet of wood that can be bought from lumber store in different thickness. This type of wood is mainly used for carpentry, though there are some furniture like cabinets that are made of plywood.
